Gandhinagar, Gujarat: As India’s economy continues to expand its footprint on the global stage, GIFT City – Gujarat International Finance Tec-City is emerging as a specialised hub for international financial services in the country.
Located near Gujarat’s capital Gandhinagar, the Greenfield Smart City brings together modern infrastructure and a wide range of sectors, including financial technology, international banking, capital markets, insurance and fund management.
Spread across approximately 886 acres, GIFT City comprises domestic business activities as well as the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC). The IFSC aims to create a conducive regulatory, technological and infrastructural ecosystem for conducting international financial services from India.
A team of journalists from Telangana, currently on a Gujarat visit organised under the aegis of PIB Hyderabad, visited GIFT City near Gandhinagar. During the visit, GIFT City representatives Prashant Yadav, Siddharth Patel, Tejaswini Akhavat, Upesh Barhat, Lovleen Garg and Nilesh Pure briefed the journalists on the city’s infrastructure, financial ecosystem and emerging opportunities.
From India to Global Markets
Traditionally, Indian institutions seeking to undertake international financial transactions have relied on established global financial centres such as Singapore, Dubai and London. GIFT IFSC is emerging as an effort to create a comparable international financial ecosystem within India.
The centre is developing as a specialised platform for international banking, capital markets, insurance, fund management, fintech and aircraft leasing, among other financial services.
Its ability to connect global institutions with both Indian and international markets is increasingly becoming one of GIFT City’s key strengths. New-age sectors such as financial technology, digital services and Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are also expanding their presence in the city.

Unified Regulatory Framework – A Key Advantage
One of the major features of GIFT IFSC is its specialised regulatory framework for international financial services.
The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) serves as the unified regulator for financial services within the IFSC, bringing various regulatory functions under a single institutional framework and facilitating ease of doing business.

Internationally aligned regulations, modern technology infrastructure and an environment designed to support financial activities are positioning GIFT IFSC as an attractive destination for global financial institutions.

From Banking to FinTech
GIFT City is witnessing the development of a diverse financial ecosystem covering banking, insurance, fund management, capital markets and fintech.
Alongside international banking operations, stock exchanges, investment funds, asset management companies, insurance firms and financial technology companies are establishing operations in the city.
As a result, GIFT City is evolving beyond a conventional financial centre into a multi-sector financial services ecosystem, bringing different segments of the global financial industry together.
A New Definition of a Smart City
GIFT City’s identity extends beyond financial services. Advanced urban planning, smart utility systems, underground utility tunnels and modern command-and-control systems form an important part of its infrastructure.
The integrated infrastructure is designed to efficiently manage essential services such as electricity, water and communications. This approach provides GIFT City with a distinctive model of urban development compared with conventional cities.
More Than a Place to Work
While GIFT City is being developed as an international financial centre, its vision extends beyond office spaces and commercial establishments.
Residential developments, commercial areas, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, hotels, restaurants and recreational amenities are being developed in line with a Work-Live-Play concept.
Its proximity to Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, along with connectivity through roads, railways, metro services and access to the airport, adds to the city’s strategic advantage.
A Strategic Centre for India’s Future Financial Power
As the Indian economy grows in scale and global influence, the need for a strong domestic platform for international financial services is also increasing. In this context, GIFT City is acquiring greater strategic significance.
It is not merely another smart city being developed in Gujarat. It is positioning itself as a strategic gateway connecting India with global financial markets.
The convergence of finance, technology, innovation and international business within a single ecosystem could make GIFT City an important component of India’s future financial landscape.
India’s Gateway to Global Opportunities
The larger story of GIFT City is about India’s ambition to create global financial capabilities within the country and connect them seamlessly with international markets.
“How is GIFT City emerging as India’s new gateway to global financial markets?” This remains the central question surrounding the city’s transformation.
As GIFT City continues to expand its financial and technological ecosystem, it is positioning itself to play an increasingly important role in reflecting India’s economic capabilities on the global stage in the coming decade.
Global financial opportunities need not always be pursued outside India. GIFT City represents an effort to create those opportunities within India and build stronger links with the global economy.
