Hyderabad: The 185th birth anniversary of Mukta Salve, the first Dalit woman writer and a renowned social reformer of the 19th century, was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Osmania University under the banner of ‘Students’ Day’. The programme was organised in the presence of students, with Gayakwad Tulasidas Mang, President of Mang Samaj Telangana State, presiding over the event.Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Dr. Namrata Bagde, Professor and Head of the Marathi Department, Osmania University, said that education is the greatest divine remedy for social transformation. She highlighted Mukta Salve’s role as a guiding light for students and a strong voice for women, and stressed that her birth anniversary should be officially observed as Students’ Day.Professor Wagmare Mayadevi, Head of the Hindi Department, demanded that the life and works of Mukta Salve be included in academic curricula so that future generations understand her contribution to social justice and education.The programme was attended by Osmania University faculty members Prof. K. Sangeetha and Dr. Ajay Kumar, Mang Samaj Telangana State General Secretary Kamble Shankar Mang, Hyderabad Committee Vice President Namwad Ramakanth Mang, leaders of various student organisations, and a large number of students.Mukta Salve created history by writing a revolutionary essay against untouchability at the young age of 14, making her one of the earliest voices of resistance and reform in Indian social history.
