In a groundbreaking effort to enhance science and mathematics education in rural Telangana, the Telangana Development Forum (TDF) and Youth for Seva (YFS) have launched the Science Lab on Wheels initiative. This project is designed to bring practical learning and immersive Virtual Reality (VR) education directly to high school students in remote areas, making STEM education accessible and engaging.
Equipped with state-of-the-art scientific equipment, VR headsets, projectors, and laptops, the mobile science lab visits schools across Mandals in Telangana from 10 AM to 5 PM daily. Each lab is manned by two qualified instructors who facilitate curriculum-based experiments and 360-degree VR experiences.
Speaking at the launch, TDF representatives stated, “Our mission is to bridge the educational divide by stimulating curiosity and empowering students with hands-on learning tools to inspire future innovators.”
The project aims to cover 50% of Mandals in Telangana within five years, benefiting over 450,000 students annually. Each van serves 10-12 schools in a Mandal, ensuring wide reach and impact.
Special Focus on Girls’ Education
Yesterday, TDF launched its second Science Lab on Wheels van, focusing on empowering girls in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) schools. The inaugural session was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Samagra Shiksha Joint Director Sri P. Rajeev, KGBV State Coordinator Dr. Shirisha, and Yadadri District Education Officer Sri Satyanarayana. This new van will benefit over 2,200 girls across 11 schools in Yadadri district, offering them opportunities to learn science beyond textbooks.
Future Plans
TDF is actively working to expand this initiative to more districts by June 2025, seeking CSR funding to sustain and scale the project. With transparency at its core, progress will be tracked via a dedicated website, and quarterly reviews will ensure accountability.
The Science Lab on Wheels represents a significant step towards making quality STEM education a reality for rural students in Telangana.
